They are usually simply defined physical objects. To break it down, first lets explore a landmark that attracts a player’s eye, then the image of the environment and lastly, the mental map created not in space, but in time.įirstly, landmarks in this game act as an external point-reference. This pattern is used throughout the game and it branches out into some game design quirks unique to this game. Curiosity in Outer Wilds stems from the ‘landmarks’ and grows to massive proportions owing to the image of the environment. Image source: The world design of Outer Wilds acts as a catalyst to your curiosity. But, the major driving force to dive deep into the game’s core mechanics comes from your own curiosity. Even the narrative cues provided through NPC interactions only act as triggers to visit a particular planet. Apart from the most basic layout of the solar system, the game doesn’t even provide us with map. During the course of the game we aren’t guided by waypoints or quest markers. The real challenge lies in exploration and discovery during which the game prefers that all the interactions be physical. But, survival in Outer Wilds isn’t the most challenging aspect of the game. Our suit provides us with the information about our vitals, it tells us if we are depleting on oxygen or on fuel. Most of the interactions in the game are physical rather than virtual. Outer Wilds achieve this by cleverly taking away some of the pampering we as gamers are usually accustomed to. Your character only gets stronger when you get smarter. The only powerup you get throughout the game is the knowledge. We have played adventure games in the past focused on action, building and even exploration, while Outer Wilds does sit under the exploration games umbrella, I would like to think that the game is about learning.
